Nestled between the Shawangunk Ridge to the east and the Catskill Mountains rising up in the northwest, the Ellenville Central School District is located just two hours from New York City and 90 minutes from Albany. With the cities of Kingston, Middletown, and Poughkeepsie all less than an hour away, this rural area boasts an ethnically rich and culturally diverse community with access to many urban amenities.
The District has an enrollment of approximately 1,475 students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 and covers parts of both Ulster and Sullivan Counties, including the communities of Ellenville, Napanoch, Wawarsing, Cragsmoor, Spring Glen, Greenfield Park, and Phillipsport. Ellenville Elementary School and the Junior/Senior High School, its Stars Academy P-TECH program, as well as the District Offices, are all conveniently situated on one single campus on Maple Avenue. There are three community colleges and several colleges with graduate programs all located within commuting distance.
Ellenville has at its core a thriving community of longtime residents and enthusiastic newcomers. Working together, this group has secured grants and private funding to support the Downtown Revitalization Initiative. Under this five-year plan, new solar street lights illuminate downtown, murals designed by local artists brighten the exterior of buildings, and an artisans and farmers market, called Market on Market, is held bi-monthly. There are also community events like the Blueberry Festival, Wawarsing Wassail, and the Fourth of July parade and fireworks to enjoy as well.
Surrounded by natural beauty, Ellenville is a recreation destination for camping, fishing, boating, hang gliding, mountain climbing, golf, tennis, and skiing. In addition, there are a variety of cultural attractions including Shadowland Stages, a not-for-profit professional theater company that not only performs productions of contemporary plays and musicals in a renovated art deco theater, but also provides enriching opportunities for our students to explore performing arts through our strong partnership. Another local treasure is the Ellenville Public Library and Museum. Chartered in 1893 as a school district library with 1,000 books, it has grown to include nearly 50,000 printed materials and is committed to collecting, preserving, and sharing Ellenville’s local history. This location offers something for everyone.
