Electronic Device Expectations

For the 2024-2025 school year, we will be implementing new protocols at Ellenville Jr/Sr High School related to cell phones and other electronic devices.

Expectations
Cell Phones and all other electronic devices are prohibited during each student’s instructional periods and must be turned off and stored away from the student’s person, belongings, or desk.  Storage locations include hallway locker, classroom locker, Chromebook cart, or other teacher-designated location.

Electronic communication devices include but are not limited to:

  • Cell phones

  • iPads/tablets

  • Smart watches

  • Earbuds

  • Headphones

  • Gaming devices

Reasons for the Change
Restricting electronic devices during instructional time will improve attention and focus for academic success which promotes a healthy culture of classroom collaboration.  In addition, studies have found a strong correlation between excessive smartphone use and increased rates of depression, anxiety, bullying, social conflict and stress among adolescents and young adults. Social media usage has been linked to negative body image and lower self esteem as well. Restricting electronic devices also prepares students for real world expectations in college and career.

How Parents/Guardians Can Help
We understand that cell phones play a crucial role in your child’s safety and communication. However, we believe that with your support, we can successfully implement this expectation and see positive outcomes for our students. Here’s how you can partner with us to support your child:

  • Discuss the expectations with your child. Talk to your child about the importance of this expectation and how it can benefit their learning experience and well-being.

  • Set expectations for cell phone use at home. Consider establishing similar guidelines at home to reinforce the importance of balancing screen time with other activities.

We appreciate your cooperation and partnership in creating a learning environment where all students can thrive. Your involvement is key to ensuring that our students not only excel academically but also grow into well-rounded, healthy individuals.
