Congratulations to My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Fellows Jacob Roller, Marcus Lewis Rivera, Henry Jones, Zach Nixon, Caleb Norat, and Nisean Abney, who were honored by the Town of Wawarsing for their commitment to success and service to others at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day ceremony, held at the Ellenville Reformed Church on Sunday, January 14. The students were joined by Nilsary Lewis-Rivera of the Town of Wawarsing Recreation Department, as well as Frank Mulhern, school and community coordinator for the Ellenville Central School District, Ellenville Mayor Evan Trent, and Ellenville Central School District Superintendent Lisa Wiles.
“One of the New York State challenges the Fellows have taken on is to create a MBK community beyond the walls of the school, and today’s event served as an invitation to the entire community to join the Fellows in that challenge,” said Mulhern. Trent and Wiles have both agreed to co-sign the MBK’s letter of commitment to the New York State Commissioner of Education for this challenge. A community meeting to discuss the MBK Community Challenge will be scheduled in February for all interested parties to attend.
“I cannot think of any greater thing to do in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. than to bring young men, our very own My Brother’s Keeper Fellows, to the Ellenville Reformed Church,” Mulhern added. “It was their opportunity and pleasure to deliver an invitation to the whole community to join us in our commitment to meeting the National MBK priorities, which focus on equitable access to education and an equal chance at success in life. The youth have spoken!”
