Students across grade levels at Ellenville Elementary School were treated to a special visit from children's author Daniel Jude Miller on February 19.
During his presentation, Miller shared his creative journey with our students, from his beginnings as an illustrator for other writers to developing his own stories and characters. He revealed how he finds inspiration in the world around him, and demonstrated this by sharing the backstory of one of his own tissue box monsters—characters made from tissue boxes and common household items that take on lives of their own based on their creators’ imaginations.
In preparation for his visit, our students designed and built their own tissue box monsters and devised their unique backstories to share with Miller, who promptly declared every design a winner!
Our students' monsters and their stories are now on display in a special showcase by the library. And stay tuned—these colorful characters will soon be featured together as students work with librarian Sarah Mitchell in a collaborative book project.
Thank you to Mr. Miller for an inspiring day, and to our talented young creators for thinking outside the box—with a box! Stay tuned for our tissue box monsters' further adventures...
